Cannings travelled to Southwick on Saturday to face Beehive CC in our first away game of the season which also brought our first loss. After choosing to field first, opening bowlers Harry Easton and Graham Mansell started brightly and had the hosts at 2-2 before the innings began to slip away. While they should have been kept to a much more manageable total, missed chances allowed Beehive to reach 218-8 from their 45 overs, with two wickets apiece for Easton, Mansell, Garreth Robb and Matt Tilley. Mansell’s second also happened to be his 150th league wicket for the club, the first Cannings player to ever reach that milestone.
Cannings’ innings started shakily and never really recovered. Richard and Graham Mansell opened for the second week running but had both departed with just 16 runs on the board. Some strong hitting from Tom Wellard and Tilley gave us some brief hope before both were bowled for 28 and 20 respectively. After that, Robb’s 20 not out was the only score to reach double figures and a typically ‘All Cannings’ batting performance collapsed on 111 all out.
A home fixture against local rivals Wilcot is next for Cannings and, with a good record against them in the past, we will be hoping to get back on track straight away.
